American Bank, N.A.’s banking “charter” dates back to December 7, 1887 (two years before the town of Remsen was incorporated). James F. Toy started the bank under the name of Farmers Loan and Trust Company with an original capitalization of $50,000.

Early directors and stockholders of the bank were Hans Spiecker, Anton Lampert, Henry Maass, T.P. Scott, August Steffen, Ludwig Staab, Carl Staab, John Kramer, Hans Pieper, Hubert Nothem, Paul Zenk, Anton Wintz, L.H. Harnack, Detlof Lindemann, Simon Rothlisberger, Math Reith, August Foerster, Evald Jorgensen, M. Scheel, Frank Spiecker, and Peter Spiecker.
The bank was renamed First Trust & Savings Bank in 1918.

In September of 1994, AmBank Company, Inc. of Sioux Center, Iowa purchased the bank. The major stockholder and CEO at that time and presently is W. “Dale” Den Herder. Coincidentally, Mr. Den Herder’s first job out of college was working for the original owner’s family in Sioux City at Toy National Bank. The bank’s assets totaled $40 million at this time.

In November of 1995, the name was changed to the present name of American Bank, N.A.

A month later on December 11, 1995 the Le Mars office opened out of a temporary building.

In 1999, a permanent structure was built in Le Mars.

American Investment and Trust opened an office in the Le Mars bank in January, 2001.

AmBank Insurance opened an office in Le Mars in March, 2003.

Ambank Company Inc. currently offers insurance services in 9 different locations in NW Iowa under the name of Perspective Insurance.

In July of 2010, the bank in Remsen moved to its current location in a new facility on the west edge of town on Highway 3 with 11 employees.

In 2012, an addition was built on to the Le Mars office to accommodate the growth in lending services. The number of employees who work in
Le Mars total 27.

American Bank is locally owned which assures local control, local knowledge, and local decision-making.

Our roots have built a firm foundation of “Achieving Success Together” which we are proud to carry through into the future.
